Mitsubishi has lent its support to calls for the removal of VAT from the purchase of all-electric vehicles.

The campaign to suspend VAT on 100% electric powered vehicles is being led by the RAC and leading motoring journalist and broadcaster Quentin Willson, and its proponents claim such a move would help bridge the price gap between electric and conventionally powered cars, boosting demand, investment, and further development.

"While the Government gives £5,000 grants for EVs, they're still too expensive for mass market," said Quentin Willson, "Clawing back thousands of pounds of that grant in VAT isn't helping. We need to create demand among consumers and investor confidence. The UK must lead the world in green car technology before the Chinese beat us to it."

Mitsubishi have a strong interest in the electric vehicle market, with their all electric i-MiEV released in the UK earlier this year having been launched in Japan back in July 2009. In backing the campaign by Willson and the RAC, Mitsubishi UK Managing Director Lance Bradley went even further, calling for free use of bus lanes, and free parking in all London Boroughs and other large cities for 100% electric vehicles.

Mitsubishi also used the announcement to confirm that an i-MiEV will be available to test drive at the 'Drive the Future' event at Motorexpo in Canary Wharf, London, on 12th June.
