Honda’s Collision Mitigation Brake System technology has been hailed as the main reason why the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) has described the new Honda Civic as one of Europe’s safest cars.
The Civic has landed the maximum rating for safety and Honda is proud of the achievement.
Honda's Collision Mitigation Brake System focuses around the idea of alerting the driver when a potential collision is recognised at both low and high speeds.
The technology is a radar-based, emergency braking system, and aims to inhibit collisions even when vehicles are stationary.
Honda estimates that if all cars were fitted with a Collision Mitigation Brake System, anywhere from 200,000 to 250,000 accidents could be prevented each year.
This suggestion followed a study of accident statistics in Germany and figures from a wider European survey.
Rapid developments in safety technology
Euro NCAP introduced its new rating scheme in February 2009 and, remarkably, all Honda models have achieved 5-stars following various tests since that date.
The rating was created as a result of the rapid developments in new safety technologies.
With the new Civic achieving a maximum safety rating and the Advanced NCAP reward, Honda appears to be fully committed to safety.
All Civic models include driver and passenger front and side airbags as well as full-length curtain airbags. They also have three-point emergency locking retractor seatbelts.
The company reiterated their overall commitment to safety in an official statement: "The new Civic's top safety rating and Advanced NCAP reward reflect Honda's commitment to overall vehicle safety".
Other manufacturers could learn from such a high level of commitment to an increasingly prominent issue in the world of motoring. Honda launched its new Earth Dreams Technology engines in 2011 with a view to also becoming a leader in eco-friendly technology.
