The poor state of Britain's roads are causing a headache for drivers, with Kwik Fit claiming over £400m a year is spent on replacing damaged tyres.
The company has released the finding of a specially-commissioned study, indicating that over half (53%) of drivers have suffered tyre damage requiring replacement in the past two years. A third of those who were surveyed laid the blame squarely at the conditions of the roads, with potholes the most common cause at 22%, and hitting debris in the road accounting for a further 11% of recorded damage.
Drivers also held their hands up in some cases, with 19% of damage to tyres arising from hitting the kerb, and 4% from driving with under-inflated tyres.
Kwik Fit is urging drivers to check their tyre pressures regularly, and also to check the tyre sidewalls for signs of damage, a task only 35% of surveyed drivers admit to completing regularly. Driving with under-inflated tyres is a major factor in sidewall damage.
The survey put a figure of £439m per year on the cost of replacing damaged tyres that were otherwise healthy and legal.
