It’s not every day that potholes come to attention in a positive light – in fact it's almost never, but try telling that to Ray Lee.
The infamous road imperfections are the scourge of the modern day motorist; however it seems that one of them actually corrected a life-threatening problem for Mr Lee.
The 65-year-old from Salisbury was taken ill after exercising on a cross trainer at home. His heart rate had scaled the dangerous height of 186 beats per minute and he was in need of urgent hospital treatment.
Consequently he was picked up by an ambulance and taken to Salisbury District Council. It just so happens that while on route the ambulance struck a pothole, and incredibly the bump resulted in Mr Lee’s heart rate dropping back to a normal and healthy 60 beats per minute.
When speaking to his local paper, the Salisbury Journal, Mr Lee had this to say: "I'd been cursing the council for months about the state of the roads, but now I never want them to fill in another pothole again.
"I was on a stretcher in the back of the ambulance and suddenly there was a huge jolt as we hit a pothole. I remember feeling myself lift off the bed and everyone in the ambulance jumped.
"I was told afterwards they would have done a procedure in the hospital to stop the spasm in my heart, but driving over the pothole did the trick."
He did go on to spend two days in hospital but was told after a few tests that he could go home, but advised to take things easy.
Now here at CarSite we're certainly not advocating for councils across the country to slow down on filling in potholes, but we thought this particular one deserved a special mention.
