Porsche are seeking approval from the board of parent company VW to launch new coupé and convertible cars based on the Panamera platform.
Porsche really have been busy lately developing new models. Previously the German company has announced that they plan to refresh their current line up over the course of the next three years. Last year saw the release of the new Cayenne SUV and there’s an updated 911 due to arrive in time for the Frankfurt Motor Show this year. There is a new Boxter due to be unveiled in Geneva in 2012, and both a new Cayman and a long-wheelbase Panamera pencilled in for early 2013. 2013 will also see the arrival of the 918 Spyder and an Audi-Q5 based Cajun SUV, and a small roadster based on the VW concept car ‘BlueSport’ is also being planned. But now it appears that they are also seeking approval from VW to produce two new front-engine cars as well: a coupé and a convertible.
The second-gen Porsche Panamera is due to go on sale in 2014, and if the VW board gives the go-ahead to these new cars they will be based on the platform provided by this car, and will be added to the range sometime after this release. It is thought that the coupé, which will be a smaller two-door version on the Panamera and has already been nicknamed the ‘Pajun’, or Panamera Junior, could go on sale in late 2015, which a convertible model hitting the shops around a year after that.
The smaller coupé, which is to be a front-engined car, recalls the old Porsche 928. It will use the same 6 and 8 cylinder engines as the larger Panamera, but it is not yet known whether the top end models will feature the four-wheel-drive option that is available for the larger car, or whether it will be available in rear-wheel-drive only.
It seems there is a good chance that the new models will share some components with the next Bentley Continental GT as the VW group are known to want to improve the economies of scale in its luxury brands by increases cooperation between the two companies.
It is also possible that Porsche will try to take on the Ferrari FF with a cheaper rival, producing a shooting brake estate model, but the company have yet to confirm whether this will in fact be the case.
