A new Peugeot hybrid is set to rival current electric hybrid models.
It may seem like a story from a science fiction movie but it appears that Peugeot have a genuine plan to run a car partly on fresh air. 2016 will see the beginning of a new step in the race to find the perfect fuel.
The Peugeot 2008 Hybrid Air will have stiff competition in a market where hybrid vehicles are making frequent technological strides. Instead of using a combination of engine power and battery power as current hybrid cars do, the Peugeot will combine a traditional engine with a hydraulic air pump which will provide the green credentials.
‘We are not talking about weird and wacky machines. These are going to be in everyday cars.’ said PSA Peugeot-Citroen.
The plan is that drivers will take advantage of the air power in urban areas and slow moving traffic. The car will automatically switch to zero-emission driving when doing less than 43mph. It will have no battery and so presents no environmental hazard in terms of disposal. Many current hybrids have large and expensive batteries which are difficult to dispose of safely.
The 2008 Hybrid Air will be available from £16,000 in 2016 and claims to offer 94mpg with hopes that it will reach 117mpg by 2020.
