Peugeot seem to be hitting form as the Le Mans 24 Hours approaches, with a one-two finish at the 1000 km of Spa.
The No.7 Peugeot 908 of Alex Wurz, Anthony Davidson, and Marc Gene emerged victorious after a six hour battle at the challenging Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium, followed over the line by the sister No.8 vehicle of Franck Montagny, Stephane Sarrazin, and Nicolas Manassian. Both cars made excellent starts, Wurz ending the first lap in 3rd having started in 12th place while Montagny, having started in a lowly 48th place on the grid, made up an exceptional 38 places by the end of the first lap.
Wurz grabbed second place half an hour into the race, and finally overhauled race leader Andre Lotterer in the Audi R18 just before the first round of refuelling stops. It looked like a Peugeot 1-2-3 was on the cards with the No.9 car of Sebastian Bourdais-Pedro Lamy-Simon Pagenaud in 3rd spot until Pagenaud had to pit half an hour from the end for repairs, eventually finishing 8th.
The victory for the Wurz-Davidson-Gene Peugeot 908 marked the fifth successive victory for Team Peugeot Total in the event, whose attentions now turn to the Le Mans 24 Hours. "Our aim for the Spa race was prepare for Le Mans", said Peugeot Sport Technical Director Bruno Famin, "This result is a boost for the confidence of the team, but our confidence is contained and reasoned, because the gaps are small. Le Mans will still be a difficult and complicated race."
