Distracted drivers cause more than 2,500 crashes every day because they are too busy ogling members of the opposite sex, new research has found.

Drivers are particularly likely to crash into lampposts and other vehicles in the summer months, when both men and women are wearing less clothing.

In a study of 2,142 drivers, 60% of men admitted to being distracted by an attractive woman, while only 12% of females admitted to having their concentration disrupted by a man.

Billboards featuring models were also singled out as a major distraction for motorists.

Insurance company Direct Line also revealed that 17% of affected male drivers are aware that losing their concentration is dangerous, but said that they "could not help but look".

Spokesman Matt Owen said, "Stealing a quick look at an attractive pedestrian or billboard model may well be a bit of fun but, on a serious note, drivers shouldn't underestimate that this type of distraction is a major contributing factor in road accidents."
