As French automotive manufacturer Peugeot marks its 200th anniversary, the EX1 – which was built as part of the anniversary celebrations – smashes the previous lap record at the Nurburgring for an electric vehicle.

The previous record time of 9:52 was set by a Mini E driven by former DTM racer Thomas Jager, in a lap which saw a top speed of 116mph. The Peugeot EX1, driven by PSA-DRD tuner-technician Stephane Caillet, beat this time by more than 50 seconds, crossing the line at 9:01.

Using two electric motors, one on each axle, the EX1 produces 340bhp in total and a maximum 177 lb-ft of torque. This output is greater than that of its Mini counterpart, which produces 204bhp according to BMW.

However, while the achievement of the Peugeot vehicle is an impressive one, it is worth noting that the Mini E was the first and only electric vehicle to complete a lap at the Nurburgring. Nevertheless, considering a Vauxhall Corsa only completes the lap 7 seconds quicker coming in at 8:54, the EX1 certainly has reason to be proud.
