Nissan has taken the wraps off its new Pulsar hatchback, which marks the manufacturer's return to the small family car market for the first time since 2006.
The new Pulsar, which will compete with the likes of the Volkswagen Golf and the Ford Focus, will be go into production at Nissan's factory in Barcelona before going on sale in the UK in the autumn.
The styling of the new Pulsar has clearly been influenced by existing models in the Nissan line-up, especially the Qashqai and the X-Trail. The V-shaped grille, angular headlights and sharp body creases are all part of Nissan's current design strategy.
At 4,385mm in length, the Pulsar is 115mm longer than a Golf but 255mm shorter than an X-Trail, despite sharing the bigger car's 2700mm wheelbase. Nissan claims that the Pulsar will offer best-in-class rear passenger room.
Three engines will be available from launch -- two petrols and a diesel, all turbocharged. The entry-level 1.2-litre petrol turbo develops 113bhp, while the 1.6-litre petrol unit churns out 187bhp. The 1.5-litre dCi diesel, meanwhile, produces 108bhp and emits as little as 95g/km of CO2.
A hot Nismo-badged version of the Pulsar is also on the cards, with a tuned version of the 1.6-litre petrol unit. Nissan will be pitching the car against the likes of the Focus ST and the Golf GTI.
Prices for the new Nissan Pulsar have yet to be confirmed; however, we expect the entry-level 1.2 to cost from around £16,000.
