Nissan's all electric LEAF will now be available to hire customers after the Japanese manufacturer announced a link up with Europcar.

The 2011 World and European Car of The Year will be available for hire from February in London and Paris. London Mayor, Boris Johnson, has previously announced aims to make his city the electric car capital of Europe. The LEAF's 110 mile range is more than 90% of UK commuters drive in a day.

The pilot scheme will initially operate for six months, but if it is successful it could eventually be introduced on a longer-term basis and in more markets.

Every customer hiring a LEAF will be given a face-to-face handover by trained Europcar staff, and will recharge it completely free of charge, waiving the standard service fee usually made for vehicle refuelling.

Ken McCall, Managing Director of Europcar UK, said, "Hiring a Nissan LEAF could be the ideal option for motorists keen to reduce their fuel costs and avoid congestion charges. At the forefront of electric vehicle technology, it fits perfectly with our philosophy of pioneering sustainable car hire solutions, giving customers a real choice when it comes to car hire."
