Nissan have announced their plans for the Goodwood Festival of Speed next month, including a couple of unusual record attempts.
The all electric Nissan LEAF's electric powertrain ensures that, in theory, it can be driven backwards as quickly as it can be driven forwards, unlike petrol cars which are limited by the speed of the reverse gear. This potential top speed of 90mph has inspired Nissan to aim for the fastest time ever to be achieved on the famous Goodwood hill climb course driving in reverse.
The LEAF will be driven by professional stunt driver Terry Grant who, in addition, will use a Nissan Juke to attempt to set a record time on the hill climb course in a four-wheeled machine using just two wheels.
The Goodwood Fesitval of Speed will also see the UK debut of the Nissan LEAF NISMO RC, a carbon fibre bodied racing version of the all electric LEAF powered by a lithium-ion battery pack and an electric motor generating 107bhp.
A more conventional hillclimb run will be undertaken by Nissan FIA European GT4 Championship driver Alex Buncombe, who will be behind the wheel of the 600bhp V8 Nissan GT-R currently raced by the Sumo Power GT team in the GT1 World Championship. This will be joined in the Supercar Paddock by the road going GT-R, and the recently released Nissan 370Z GT Edition.
Nissan's stand at the Festival of Speed will have an interactive feel, allowing visitors to experience the new LEAF in 3D, have a go at designing a car in its 'Innovation Lab', and have the chance to enter its GT Academy qualifying competition in partnership with Sony PlayStation Gran Turismo 5. The stand will also feature the Nissan ESFLOW electronic sports concept car in a wind tunnel-esque display.
The Goodwood Festival of Speed will place between 1st and 3rd July.
