Sales of new cars in the UK grew by 7.7 per cent last month, marking a record 27 months of consecutive growth.
The latest data released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) showed a total of 194,032 new car registrations in May – the most in May for 10 years – a figure which takes the number of UK new car registrations in 2014 past the one million mark.
SMMT have been recording UK new car sales data since 1959, and the previous high point of 26 months consecutive growth came between May 1987 and June 1989. SMMT welcomed the record period of growth as a reflection of improving UK economy.
SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes said of the latest figures: "Over the past 27 months, increasingly confident consumers have been drawn to some fantastic new products, attracted by innovative technologies, improved fuel economy and competitive deals helping make a new car more affordable. With SMMT forecasting an overall rise of around 6% over the year, the coming months should see some levelling off in growth rates as underlying demand stabilises."
