Environmental and economic factors have resulted in the purchase of the first pure electric Mitsubishi i-MiEV Police car, and its new operators hope it will encourage others to follow suit.
Police in Milton Keynes will be using electric power to carry out their duties with the introduction of the first Mitsubishi i-MiEV police car to the Thames Valley Police force.
Mitsubishi have been importing the fully-electric i-MiEV to the UK since last October, and now the Chiltern Transport Consortium - the shared service provider managing the Bedforshire Police, Civil Nuclear Constabulary, Hertfordshire Constabulary, and Thames Valley Police vehicle fleets - has taken delivery of its first i-MiEV police car. The public will see the pure-electric Mitsubishi i-MiEV police car on routine non-emergency duties around Milton Keynes city centre in its Thames Valley Police livery.
Speaking after the i-MiEV was collected from Soul's Mitsubishi of Milton Keynes earlier today, Chiltern Transport Consortium Fleet Manager Dave McDonald explained that the unusual choice of Police car was "not only necessary to protect future generations from the worst effects of global warming but also to protect the public purse from the inevitable and relentless rise in fuel prices in the coming years. The purchase not only signals Chiltern Transport Consortium's commitment to this endeavour but also promotes electric vehicles as a viable option for other fleets and individuals."
The introduction of the fully electric i-MiEV to the UK market last year is part of a greater environmental strategy by Mitsubishi, who have stated that their aim is for electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles to account for at least 20% of their overall production by 2020.
