The Mercedes S-Class has a deserved reputation as one of the most technologically innovative cars on the market.

Many of the features which we take for granted on modern cars, such as electronic ABS, seatbelt pretensioners, airbags, passenger airbags, double glazed windows, ESP, keyless entry and radar-guided cruise control, to name but a few, first saw the light of day in Mercedes' range-topping luxo-barge.

The new S-Class, which is due to hit the market next year, promises to continue the S-Class's pioneering tradition, and we're taking you on a whistle-stop tour of the new car's safety features.

Distronic PLUS

DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist

An essential feature for any fat-cat plutocrat. Mercedes' Distronic Plus adaptive cruise control system now features Steering Assist which not only accelerates and brakes for you, but also steers the car automatically to keep you in lane.

BAS Plus

BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist

A system which detects pedestrians and cross-traffic and boosts braking power accordingly.

PRESAFE PLUS

PRE-SAFE PLUS

This system uses a rear sensor to detect an imminent rear-end crash and applies the brakes in the event of an impact to prevent a secondary collision.

PRE SAFE IMPULSE

PRE-SAFE IMPULSE

The new S-Class will feature seatbelts which pull the occupants away from the direction of impact in the event of a crash, reducing the risk and severity of injuries.

Highbeam PLUS

Adaptive Highbeam Assist PLUS

This allows the S-Class's headlights to remain on full-beam constantly, without dazzling other road users, by masking out other cars in the beam's cone of light.

Night View Assist PLUS

This system alerts the driver of potential obstacles in the road such as pedestrians and animals by automatically switching from the speedometer display to a full night-vision image of the source of danger. The car will also flash a spotlight at the pedestrian to warn them of its presence.

No more bulbs

The new S-Class will be the first car ever to reach production without a single light-bulb as standard. All of the car's lighting duties have been taken up by LEDs.
