Mercedes has released new information on its forthcoming third-generation M-Class. The model, Mercedes claims, will offer impressive fuel consumption and emissions figures.
Most impressive is the new ML 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC which returns 47mpg - impressive for a 4WD car which weighs over two tonnes. The engine in the ML 250 is a 2143cc four-pot diesel developing 204bhp and hauling the M-Class to 62mph in 9 seconds and on to a top speed of 130mph. Also available will be an EU6-standard 3.0-litre V6 diesel offering 258bhp, 0-62mph in 7.4 seconds and a top speed of 139mph. Although a bigger engine is likely to be made available in the future, the current range-topper is a 3.5-litre V6 petrol delivering 306bhp, 0-62mph in 7.6 seconds and a top speed of 146mph.
The M-Class' impressive economy figures are partly down to a decreased drag coefficient of just 0.32. Mercedes has also been fiddling with the M-Class' suspension, and for the first time the M-Class is offered with selective dampers which offer a smooth ride most of the time but which firm up during abrupt manoeuvres for greater stability.
The M-Class will also include the ON&OFFROAD package which lets the driver select the driving conditions via a rotary control knob on the centre console. The six modes are Automatic, Offroad 1, Offroad 2, Winter, Sport and Trailer.
Prices have yet to be announced but the M-Class goes on sale here in the UK next spring.
