A new technology pack is being released for the Audi A6 and A7 Sportback, featuring advanced infotainment and safety features.
Buyers of a new 6-cylinder Audi A6 will be offered a new optional package including nine key technology and safety features for £3,250, which is £1,085 less than the total price of all the included features if they were bought individually. The equivalent pack for the Audi A7 Sportback also includes a head-up display and costs £3,750, which is a saving of £1,135 over the total price of all of its components.
Features included in the new pack include MMI navigation plus with MMI Touch fingertip recognition system, Google Earth navigation mapping, a colour Driver's Information System, in-car WIFI internet connection, Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity, music interface with iPod connection and the Audi pre-sense multi-level safety system. In the A7 Sportback the additional head-up display projects navigation and entertainment info onto the windscreen.
The Mobile Phone Preparation system which is included with the new package is accessed through the MMI navigation plus head unit. It allows access to online services which include Google Earth Maps for navigation, and also internet access for web surfing and sending e-mails. The MMI navigation plus is made up of two modules: a radio unit provides tuner and sound system, and the main unit includes DVD drive, two SD card slots and a 60GB hard disk containing the navigation data. One third of this 60GB is reserved for phone and MP3 music data.
Meanwhile the Bluetooth online car phone creates a Wireless Local Area Network hotspot in the car which is capable of allowing as many as eight devices to connect to the internet.
The Audi pre-sense plus safety system monitor driving conditions and is able to initiate protection and prevention measures if its sensors detect an imminent collision. These preventative measures include tensioning of the seatbelts, closing the sunroof and windows, automatic cautionary illumination of the rear brake lights, and automatic braking at up to 5 metres per second if the system detects an unavoidable impact.
At speeds of 19mph the Audi assist blind spot warning system will kick in. This system uses a pair of rear-mounted radar sensors to monitor traffic behind the car up to a distance of 70 metres. If another vehicle enters the 'critical zone' then a yellow LED display lights up in the housing of the exterior mirror. If the driver subsequently activates the indicator to change lanes, the LED display becomes brighter and begins to blink quickly in order to warn against the manoeuvre.
When the car's speed reaches 40mph the Audi Active Lane Assist is activated. This system detects the road markings using a video camera mounted in the base of the interior mirror. If the car approaches a line without the indicator having been activated first, then the system will kick in to help the driver to steer back into the lane with a gentle intervention. If required, this can also be combined with steering wheel vibration and warning tone. If the sensors detect an imminent skid then the same system can initiate counter-steering measures and also boost or reduce power assistance, and if the driver's steering movements suggest a lapse in concentration then interventions can be adjusted accordingly.
A new adaptive cruise control (ACC) system with stop & go function can regulate the vehicle's speed and distance from the vehicle ahead by accelerating and braking automatically within specified limits. The driver can use the MMI operating system to choose between three levels and four distance modes to suit any driving conditions.
The new Technology Package Advanced is available for 6-cylinder A6 Saloon, Avant SE and S line models with automatic transmission, and for the new A6 allorad quattro and the A7 Sportback.
