An innovative new 1.0-litre ‘EcoBoost’ petrol engine is to be introduced to the Ford Focus range.
A frugal new turbocharged direct injection 1.0-litre Eco Boost engine will go on sale next month in the UK across the Ford Focus range. The new engine offers performance which is comparable to Ford's traditional 1.6-litre engine, but with substantial reductions in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
The EcoBoost engine will be available with two power outputs - 99bhp and 123bhp. A five-door Ford Focus with the 123bhp EcoBoost engine will deliver a combined cycle fuel consumption figure of 56.5mpg, with CO2 emissions of 114g/km. The 99bhp version meanwhile, will provide fuel economy of 58.9mpg with best-in-class (for a petrol engine) CO2 emissions of 109g/km. 125lb-ft of torque is delivered by the new engine between 1,400rpm and 4,500rpm, which is the highest ever power density of any Ford production engine.
Both versions of the EcoBoost engine will qualify for zero vehicle excise duty in the first year, and with petrol now selling for as much as 10p per litre less than diesel, Ford are hoping that the EcoBoost engine will be able to compete with many diesel engines in terms of low running costs.
Ford's European Executive Powertrain Director Graham Hoare commented on the introduction of the new engine, saying:
"This is the third addition to our acclaimed EcoBoost engine family. Joining the 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre EcoBoost engines which span 150PS [148bhp] to 240PS [237bhp], this 1.0-litre EcoBoost signals a new era of downsized, super frugal engines for the sub-130PS [128bhp] segment. During development our UK engineers focused on improving thermal efficiency and reducing friction of the engine's internal moving parts, especially during warm-up."
The new range of Ford Focus cars starts at a price of £13,995 OTR, and the new EcoBoost engine is priced at £250 over the cost of the standard 1.6-litre 123bhp.
