The new car market has continued to grow in 2014, with registrations in January up 7.6 per cent over the same period in 2013.
A total of 154,562 new cars found homes last month, compared to 143,643 in January 2013.
"The new car market ended 2013 on a high, so it is encouraging to see the January market start the year strongly, rising 7.6%," said Mike Hawes, chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, the organisation which collates the figures.
"As fuel economy is a major consideration for many motorists, ongoing investment by vehicle manufacturers in innovative, fuel-efficient technology is a key factor in the growing demand for new cars.
"Looking ahead, the UK automotive industry expects to see moderate, sustainable growth in 2014."
The Ford Fiesta remained Britain's best-selling car last month, edging out the Ford Focus and the Vauxhall Corsa, which were the second and third most popular cars, respectively.
