BMW’s new Sports Activity Vehicle, the X3, won a top rating in the latest safety assessment tests by NCAP.

Europe's leading crash test programme NCAP has given the new BMW X3 its highest rating of 5 stars in the latest round of tests. This was achieved thanks to a wide range of standard safety equipment, and special occupant protection measures in case of collision, which BMW has built into its cars.

In the event of a crash the forces exerted on the X3 are deflected along precisely defined paths where they can be absorbed by the ample deformations zones which are built into it. This allows the passenger cell to remain relatively intact even during serious collisions.

The X3 also boasts a very stable body structure, and comes with built in safety features such as front, side, and curtain head airbags, belt latch tensioners and belt force limiters on the front seats, and ISOFIX systems in the back for attaching child seats. The restraint systems are able to take into account the type and severity of any collision so that they can trigger the most effective protection.

Other safety features which improve handling and therefore increase safety include a Dynamic Stability Control system (DSC) linked to the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive, Braking Assist, Cornering Brake Control, Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and a Tyre Defect Indicator which warns drivers about pressure loss in any of the tyres. All of these features come as standard with the new BMW X3.

Also available for the X3 is the BMW Assist Advanced eCall, an advanced emergency call system which includes automatic localisation and accident severity detection. This won praise from Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Programme) last year when it was introduced.
