BMW has unveiled its new 3 Series Touring ahead of its UK launch in September.
From the B-Pillar forwards, the new Touring is exactly the same as the saloon on which it is based, however, the large estate car rear end gives the new car an impressively large boot at 495-litres, 35-litres more than you got in the old 3 Series Touring. With the 40:20:40 rear seats folded flat, you get a vast 1,500-litres of loading space. The new car also has much more space in the cabin than its predecessor, offering 9mm more headroom and 17mm more legroom for rear seats passengers.
The 3 Series Touring will be available in three guises - the 328i, the 320d and the 330d. The 328i is fitted with a 2.0-litre petrol engine with 245bhp and 258lb-ft of torque, making for a 0-62mph time of 6.0 seconds and an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph. The 320d's 2.0-litre diesel unit develops 184bhp and 280lb-ft of torque and can manage 60.1mpg and CO2 emissions of 124g/km. Even the large 3.0-litre diesel engine fitted to the 330d manages 55.4mpg and 135g/km of CO2, and can still propel the car from 0-62mph in 5.6 seconds and on to a limited top speed of 155mph.
More engines will be made available once the 3 Series Touring reaches production, with BMW planning 320i, 318d and 316d models.
Standard equipment on the basic ES models includes 17-inch alloys, air-con, iDrive system, keyless start, cruise control and USB audio interface. All cars also come with an electronically-operated tailgate which can be activated via the key, a button on the A-pillar or a button on the boot itself. On higher-spec models, you can also operate the boot by waving your foot under the rear bumper.
The 3 Series Touring goes on sale in the UK in September, with prices starting from £29,380 for the basic 320d ES.
