A new, advanced bi-turbo TDI engine will be available for the Audi A6 Saloon, Avant allroad quattro and A7 Sportback ranges.
The most powerful V6 TDI ever made by Audi is available now for the A6 Saloon and Avant, and the A7 Sportback. Later in 2012 it will also be made available for the A6 allroad quattro with the first deliveries expected in spring. The new engine is capable of delivering 309bhp and powering executive class Audi models from 0-62mph in just slightly over five seconds, with a fuel economy of 44.1mpg.
The new twin-turbo V6 is not only the most powerful six-cylinder diesel engine ever produced by Audi, it claims that it also has the most satisfying sound, thanks to a sound actuator fitted to the exhaust system to give a sportscar like engine noise.
An Audi A6 with the new engine will be priced from £43,810 OTR, whereas the A7 Sportback version costs from £51,645. The new engine fits into the range above the current single-turbo 201bhp and 242bhp versions of the 3.0 TDI. It features a two-stage turbocharger group that enables the A6 3.0 BiTDI quattro Saloon to accelerate from 0-62mph in 5.1 seconds, and the A6 Avant and A7 Sportback in 5.3 seconds. In each of these cars the top speed is electronically limited to 155mph. They also all come with an 8-speed tiptronic transmission and the latest quattro all-wheel-drive system, which includes a self-locking centre differential and torque vectoring to improve traction and stability. There will also be the option of a sport differential that distributes power in continuous variable proportions between the rear wheels, which serves to sharpen the response even further.
As with all of Audi's current TDI engines, there will be a range of efficiency measure to reduce fuel consumption. These include start-stop technology, energy recuperation systems, and Audi's innovative thermal management system. The fuel consumption for the A6 and the A7 Sportback models is the same - 44.1mpg.
The Sound actuator which comes with the new engine is fitted in the auxillary channel of the exhaust system. Basically it is a speaker which imposes a particular oscillation pattern on the exhaust flow, transforming the usual TDI exhaust noise into the kind of roaring sound that you would expect from a high-performance petrol engine.
The new top of the range BiTDI engine is available now with SE and S line specifications for the A6 Saloon, A6 Avant and A7 Sportback, and the A6 allroad quattro model will be available to order from February.
