The new Toyota Avensis has gone into production at Toyota’s Burnaston factory near Derby, in readiness for its first customer deliveries in December.

The Japanese manufacturer has used the announcement of the start of production to reveal the pricing structure of the new Avensis range, which has been frozen to match the price of the outgoing Avensis model it replaces.

As a result, the entry level Toyota Avensis T2 saloon, powered by a 1.8-litre Valvematic petrol engine and fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox, is priced at £18,450. The top of the range Toyota Avensis T Spirit Tourer, with a diesel-powered 2.2-litre D-Cat engine and a six-speed automatic gearbox, has a price tag of £28,885.

Toyota hope that the new Avensis will appeal to fleet operators and company car drivers, and with this in mind has revised the top-selling 2.0-litre D-4D engine to increase efficiency, with CO2 emissions lowered to 119g/km.

Toyota's Burnaston factory has now produced three generations of the Avensis since the model was introduced in 1997 and, in a further boost to the UK manufacturing industry, the petrol engines will be sourced from the company's UK engine facility at Deeside.

Deputy Managing Director of Toyota Manufacturing UK, Tony Walker said, "We are proud to be starting work on the new Avensis, a car that is central to Toyota's European strategy and a key model for the UK."

Toyota also announced that the order books for the new Avensis have now been opened.
