New research has shown what British children think of their parents' driving skills, revealing some intriguing results.

According to the majority of children surveyed, their mother's driving style is much better than their father's. Children also feel that dad's driving is too fast, too aggressive, and they lose their tempers more quickly while in the driving seat compared to their more level-headed 'mummies'.

These are the key findings from a survey published by GEM Motoring Assist. After asking for the opinions of 1,300 UK children aged five to 16, the vast majority (60%) said they feel happier and more relaxed when their mum is behind the wheel.

Interestingly, the study also revealed the top five things children love about the way their mother drives. This includes: talking to keep them entertained, singing at the wheel, driving at a reasonable speed, being considerate towards other motorists and having a nicer car.

The children polled admitted that their Dads seem to be more focused on getting from A to B as quickly as possible while being behind the wheel, whereas the trip with their mothers is more light-hearted. Further findings from the research revealed that Dad's driving style can increase the chances of having an accident by 55% in comparison to Mum's driving habits.

Nevertheless, kids admit that mums have some failings too. The study highlighted that children feel like their mothers are more likely to stall the car and struggle with basic manoeuvres such as parking.

Being a good driving example

"It is important that children do not see their parents driving too fast or too aggressively, as this could have a long term effect on what they see as 'the norm'. There is a general belief that kids exposed to poor driving could mean that they copy this action when they start to drive themselves," said David Williams MBE, CEO of GEM Motoring Assist.

Williams advised drivers to always allow plenty of time for their journey so they don't have to rush. He pointed out that it is important to make your kids feel safe in the car and, "more importantly, it is vital your children are safe in the car. Not sticking to the rules and driving too fast puts your kids in a dangerous situation and could result in a serious accident," he added.
