Classic vehicles will be exempt from the MOT test from November, Roads Minister Mike Penning has today announced.
The current requirement for a car to undergo an annual MOT goes above and beyond what is required by European legislation and, as classic and historical vehicles are traditionally maintained well by their owners, they will no longer have to undergo the test.
The new legislation applies to cars first registered before 1960 and comes into force on 18th November 2012. Owners will still be able to MOT their cars on a voluntary basis.
Mike Penning said, "We are committed to cutting out red tape which costs motorists money without providing significant overall benefits ... Owners of classic vehicles will still be legally required to ensure that they are safe and in a proper condition to be on the road but scrapping the MOT test for these vehicles will save motorists money."
