Leading vehicle security firm TRACKER has revealed the startlingly high number of vehicles stolen using the owner’s keys.
The company says that 57 per cent of the vehicles it recovered last year had been stolen by this method, which enabled the thieves to disable the alarm and other security features.
TRACKER’s Head of Police Liaison, Andy Barrs, explained: “In 2013, we recovered nearly £8.5 million worth of stolen vehicles and the average value of these cars was £23,677 - highlighting how much car owners have to lose if they don't take steps to keep thieves at bay.”
The company has been recovering stolen vehicles since 1993, using VHF technology to beat organised criminal’s using GPS/GSM jamming devices, recovering on average £1 million worth of stolen vehicles each month. Used by all police forces, the TRACKER system uses a covert hidden transmitter which acts like an electronic homing device, even working if the vehicle is hidden in places such as garages and shipping containers.
