Improvements in the battery technology, electronics and innovative power-trains are some of the features of the new Mitsubishi Outlander.

Thanks to its plug-in hybrid system, motorists driving the Outlander can cover over 30 miles in 4WD electric mode alone.

While the Series Mode allows drivers to regulate power consumption and remaining battery charge - with the system automatically kick-starting the petrol engine if necessary - the Battery Drive Mode allows motorists to limit their engine's sound output and have an emission-free ride using pure EV power.

In addition, by pressing the 'Battery Charge Mode' button while on the move, drivers can control the use of battery power and even use the engine as a generator to charge the vehicle's batteries.

Electronics

With its front and rear motors acting as a generator as they feed energy back into the traction battery, Outlander's motorists can boost energy even when they hit the brakes.

The Twin Motor 4WD system removes the need for a propeller shaft, hydraulic system and clutch plate used to connect the front and rear axles in conventional 4WD systems.

Power-train

The all-new Outlander is an EV-based plug-in hybrid (P-HEV) with 4-Wheel-Drive. With a 'drive-train' combining a front electric motor with a rear electric motor, and front traction/generator, it is also the first permanent 4WD electric car.

UK car buyers will be able to choose from a range of three driving modes. This includes the Pure (Twin Motor 4WD EV); the Series (Twin Motor 4WD EV supported by ICE3 generator), and the Parallel (Twin Motor 4WD EV supplemented by ICE3 powered FWD).
