A recall has been issued by MINI on around 30,000 vehicles in the UK, and 235,000 worldwide, concerning a fault with an electric water pump.

Vehicles which could be at risk include the Cooper S and John Cooper Works models that were built between March 2006 and January 2011.

BMW, who own MINI, are investigating an incident of an engine-related fire here in the UK that, it is believed, was caused by the fault.

MINI will be writing to the owners who may be affected by the fault and hope to solve the problem by getting the cars checked by dealers, and the pumps replaced if necessary.

MINI has assured drivers that they are not in danger and that they should drive their cars as normal, as any incident arising from the fault is extremely unlikely.

“In more extreme cases, it could create a heat build-up in the wiring and some smouldering. Potentially it could cause a fire,” a spokesman for MINI claimed.

"We are not aware of any accidents or injuries connected with this. The important thing is that when people receive the letter, they simply go to their dealer and get a new water pump fitted if there is a problem."
