The MINI John Cooper Works GP, the fastest MINI ever built, will go on sale later this year in a limited run of 2,000 cars.
The new car has lapped the Nurburgring Nordschliefe in 8 min 23 seconds, 19 seconds faster than the previous fastest MINI, the Cooper S with John Cooper Works Kit. This is in no small part thanks to its 1.6-litre twin-scroll turbo engine, developing north of 220bhp, its tweaked chassis, adjustable race suspension and unique aerodynamic technology.
It's the aerodynamic technology that sets the John Cooper Works GP apart from its less powerful stablemates visually. The new car has huge side skirts, front and rear aprons, a rear diffuser and a rear spoiler. The MINI also gets race-spec brakes and racing tyres so it stops and grips better than any other MINI on the market.
The MINI John Cooper Works GP does without rear seats as MINI claims that the new car "focuses unashamedly on the needs of the driver and co-driver."
Only 2,000 MINI John Cooper Works GPs will be made and it will be officially unveiled at Le Castellet in France this weekend.
