Mercedes has revealed today that its forthcoming new SL Roadster will be made almost entirely out of aluminium.
The SL has been with us since 1954 and this will be the sixth generation of Merc's top-of-the-range luxury roadster. With the new model, Mercedes has clearly taken weight-saving very seriously - indeed, the name SL stands for sporty, lightweight. Merc has managed to cut the overall weight of the new car by 140kg over its predecessor and this should do wonders for the car's handling and performance. Mercedes claims that not only will the new car be lighter, but it should also be more rigid and quieter.
Mercedes is also making a lot of noise about its Magic Vision Control system which will be fitted to the new SL. The windscreen washer system delivers water to the windscreen just in front of the wiper blade and, as a result, visibility is not reduced when the windscreen is being washed.
There is no word on the pricing or launch date yet, but Mercedes claims it will unveil its new SL before the end of the year.
