Mercedes has unveiled its new B-Class compact MPV.

The new B-Class will initially be available with a 1.6-litre four-pot petrol engine producing 122bhp in the B 180 and 156bhp in the B 200. A 1.8-litre four-cylinder common-rail diesel will also be on offer. In the B180 CDI this will produce 109bhp and in the B 200 CDI, it will produce 136bhp. The B-Class will also get Merc's 7G-DCT double-clutch gearbox which Mercedes claims combines the comfort of an auto 'box with the efficiency of a manual.

The new car has an impressive drag coefficient of 0.26 partly due to the fact that it sits lower down than its predecessor. Despite this, Mercedes claims that interior headroom and legroom have been improved. Merc's EASY-VARIO-PLUS seating arrangement is also an optional extra on the new B-Class, allowing for easy reorganisation of the cabin.

The B-class is packed full of safety equipment, with Collision Prevention Assist warning the driver of obstacles and preparing Brake Assist for a precise braking response. Also fitted as standard, Blind Spot Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Active Parking Assist, Hill Hold function and Attention Assist should all help to keep you safe on the road.

Mercedes will unveil the new B-Class at the Frankfurt Motor Show and the car will be landing in Blighty next March.
