Mercedes-Benz has revealed details on the new GL-Class ahead of the car's UK debut early next year.

Mercedes claims that the GL is the "S-Class among off-road vehicles," and they may have a point. Although the new car is arguably more subdued and tastefully styled than its predecessor, it's still a brash, tech-laden behemoth, and is likely to appeal to the kind of person who thinks that the Range Rover is just "too discreet".

So, what's new in the GL-Class?

Well, Mercedes claims that the new car has a stiffened bodyshell, an improved chassis, and excellent aeroacoustic finishing (sound-proofing to those of us who speak English). Merc says that the GL's NVH qualities (noise, vibration and harshness) are on a par with the S-Class, and that the new car is responsive on-road and capable off-road.

What technology do you get in the new GL-Class?

Where to begin? You get AIRMATIC air suspension which Mercedes claims improves comfort, handling and road-holding. You can also opt for something called Active Curve System which reduces roll angle while going round bends. On top of this, you get bi-Xenon headlights and Night View Assist which provides a clear view of the road ahead in times of poor visibility. You can also specify a 360-degree camera, which consists of four cameras mounted on each side of the car, making parking easier. You also get ESP, ASR, ABS, Collision Prevention Assist and Attention Assist which detects if the driver is falling asleep.
