Mercedes has launched the new SL400, which usurps the SL350 as the baby of the SL range as part of a raft of subtle changes to Mercedes' sports car line-up.
And the big news is that the new car marks the introduction of turbo power to the entry-level SL for the first time.
While the old SL350 was powered by a naturally-aspirated 3.5-litre V6, the new car gets a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 direct injection petrol engine. Despite the smaller displacement, the new unit develops 328bhp and 354lb-ft of torque -- 26bhp and 81b-ft more than you got in the old model.
The new engine features a range of clever whizzbangery, including spray-guided combustion, piezo injectors and multi-spark injection. As a result, 0-62mph takes just 5.2 seconds, and flat out the SL400 will hit an electronically-limited 155mph.
Despite the performance, Mercedes claims a combined fuel consumption figure of 39mpg and CO2 emissions of 172g/km.
Mercedes has yet to confirm when the SL400 is coming to Britain, or how much it will cost, but expect a price tag slightly in excess of the SL350's £69,960 when it hits dealer forecourts.
