Further up the range is the S400 Hybrid L, which comes with a 3.5-litre petrol V6 mated to a 27bhp electric motor. 0-62mph takes 6.8 seconds --the same as the diesel -- and fuel economy stands at 44.8mpg. Prices for the S400 Hybrid L start from £69,650.
The top-of-the-range S500 L is priced from £88,130 and gets a V8 petrol engine which develops 449bhp and 516lb-ft of torque, giving a 0-62mph time of 4.8 seconds. The S500 L is the least fuel-efficient model in the range, returning 31.7mpg and emitting 207g/km of CO2.
Two trim levels are available: SE Line and AMG Line, the latter carrying a £5,000 price premium. All models get a vast array of standard equipment including LED headlights, a 13-inch TFT sat-nav, DAB radio, air suspension and a reversing camera.
Mercedes' new Magic Body Control system is also available on the new S500 L. Priced at £4,340, the system uses a camera to scan the road ahead and adjust the suspension settings accordingly.
