Mercedes has today revealed the new estate version of its latest C-Class, which will go on sale in the UK this autumn.

The new car is the fourth generation of the C-Class estate and the second model to join the C-Class line-up after the saloon.

From the front, the C-Class estate looks fairly similar to the saloon; however, it's all change from the B-pillars back. At 4,702mm long and 1810mm wide, it's 96mm longer and 40mm wider than the outgoing model and the result of this is an extra 45mm more rear legroom, as well as more elbow and headroom.

Load capacity has also increased. With the rear seats up, there's 490-litres of stowage space on offer -- 5-litres more than in the old car -- and with the rear seats down you get 1,510-litres of space -- a 10-litre improvement on the outgoing model.

It should also be a more practical load bay as the seats can now be folded in a 40/20/60 split, instead of the 60/40 split of the old car.

But despite the extra size and space, the new C-Class estate is 65kg lighter than the car it replaces, thanks largely to the use of aluminium, which makes up 49 per cent of the car.

The engine line-up will echo the saloon's, with four petrol engines on offer, with power outputs ranging from 156bhp to 333bhp, and a diesel line-up with power outputs varying from 115bhp to 204bhp. A petrol hybrid with 275bhp and a diesel hybrid with 231bhp will also be joining the line-up, and an AMG version of the car -- most likely with a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 -- will be added to the range in due course.

The interior has been taken over from the C-Class saloon, featuring a range of driver assistance systems culled from the new S-Class. Buyers can also specify an 'Easy Pack' motorised tailgate function or a 'Hands-Free Access' option, which allows the operator to open the boot by waving their foot under the rear bumper.

The C-Class estate will go on sale towards the end of September, with prices expected to be around £1,200 higher than the equivalent saloon.
