Mazda has announced the introduction of an innovative new braking system on its upcoming CX-5 compact crossover.

Called Smart City Brake Support, or SCBS, the system is designed to aid the avoidance of collisions at low speeds or in slow moving traffic. At speeds between 2.5 and 19mph, its laser sensor will detect vehicles or obstacles ahead, and apply the brakes and reduce engine output automatically if the driver fails to do so themselves. By pre-pressurising the brakes, the SCBS system will also result in a quicker response when the driver does apply the brakes. The system is designed to reduce the frequency and severity of one of the most common type of accidents - rear-end collisions at low speeds.

Mazda has stated its plan to introduce the SCBS braking system on future models, but it will make its debut initially on the CX-5 compact crossover when the new model makes its sale debut this spring.
