If the standard Mazda MX-5 is a little too pedestrian for your tastes, you can now buy the MX-5 GT4 racer for £150,000.
The GT4 is powered by a tuned and turbocharged version of the standard MX-5's 2.0-litre four-pot engine which develops 320bhp. There isn't an awful lot of weight for the engine to shift around either, as Mazda has slashed the car's weight to just 1,000kg -- 175kg less than the standard model.
British company Jota Sport oversaw the MX-5's crash diet, using carbon fibre to keep the weight down. The GT4 has carbon-fibre doors, a carbon-fibre front splitter and a carbon-fibre rear diffuser and wing.
That's a lot of carbon-fibre.
In addition to this, the heavy glass windows have been thrown out in favour of polycarbonate versions.
The GT4 should also be a hoot to drive thanks to a six-speed flappy-paddle gearbox, racing brakes, a racing clutch and adjustable traction control.
However, there is a small catch. The GT4 is not road-legal.
You might argue that £150,000 is a lot of money to spend on a car you can't drive on the public highway -- and we'd have to agree -- but, if you're a track-day fanatic with money to burn, it looks like the GT4 could be the car for you.
