The new Mazda CX-5 will feature the debut of the innovative ‘Smart City Brake Support’ crash avoidance system, among other safety features which will be standard across the range.

The compact 4x4, which will arrive in the UK this spring, features "a range of breakthrough technologies" that are designed to increase general safety levels.

One of the most important features that will improve the vehicle's safety is the so-called 'Smart City Brake Support' (SCBS). This particular system aims to avoid or minimise the impact of a frontal collision when driving at speeds between 2.5 and 20mph.

As the manufacturer has explained, the SCBS uses a laser sensor mounted at the top of the windscreen to detect a vehicle or obstacle in front of the CX-5. If the sensor perceives another vehicle, the SCBS automatically activates the brakes and reduces the engine output at the same time.

Regarding road incidents at low speeds, the manufacturer pointed out that these are actually among the most common accidents, affecting fleet repair costs, insurance premiums and vehicle downtime.

Further safety measures

Other safety technologies include the SKYACTIV, a new safety system that aims to improve occupant protection by what the manufacturer claims, is a "unique vehicle structure."

The SKYACTIV features a straighter, more continuous frame and an extremely efficient multi-load path structure for the SKYACTIV-Body of the vehicle in the event of a crash, Mazda have said.

The objective of this structure is to absorb the load at the time of a crash by dispersing it efficiently and in multiple directions. This system is designed to improve the overall safety of all occupants.

Car buyers hoping to purchase the Mazda CX-5 could do so from £21,395. Brits will be able to choose from a SKYACTIV-G 2.0-litre 163bhp 2-wheel drive (2WD) petrol engine, SKYACYTIV-D 2.2-litre 148bhp and 2.2-litre 173bhp diesel engines with two and all-wheel drive choices.
