Mazda's new CX-5 has been awarded the maximum five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests.

Although unsurprising by modern standards - most new cars achieve a five star rating -- this result confirms the effectiveness of Mazda's new SKYACTIV safety technology.

The CX-5 scored 94% for adult occupant protection, 87% for child occupant protection and 86% for its safety systems.

61% of the Mazda's body shell is made from high-tensile steel and its front and rear bumpers are made from the strongest steel ever used on a production car. Despite this, the CX-5 is extremely light and the diesel models manage over 60mpg.
