It's official. After ten years in production, Mercedes-Benz has finally announced that the Maybach is to be discontinued.

Merc announced last year that it was planning to drop the Rolls-Royce rival, but it is only now that the Maybach's death has become official.

It's no surprise really. The Maybach was always hugely unpopular; only around 2,000 have been produced in the last ten years. It was also a tad garish and, with the world economy stagnating, few people can afford to pay upwards of £200,000 for an overpriced Mercedes S-Class.

So if you're looking to spend an inordinately large sum of money on a plush luxury car, what do you do now? Well, you do what everyone else has been doing since 2003, and buy a Rolls-Royce Phantom.
