Research by insurance companies has found that as many as one in four people have damaged another vehicle and driven away.

Insurers say that low-speed accidents and the related damage costs British motorists £440 million every year in repair bills. Bodywork can be exceptionally expensive to fix and it is likely that many people decide not to get it repaired.

A quarter of respondents to the survey said that they had been guilty of damaging someone’s car and leaving without notifying anybody, nearly half of people say they have been on the receiving end of such deceitful behaviour. The numbers suggest that there is a significant number of perpetrators who didn’t own up to their actions, either that or there is a group of repeat bumpers.

The UK hotspots for ‘bump and runs’ ordered highest first are London, Leeds, Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Cardiff, Liverpool, Plymouth, Manchester and Sheffield.

Multi-storey car parks are the place where your car is most vulnerable, a third of incidents take place there and petrol station forecourts are frequent venues with a fifth of all bumps. A quarter of people said that they had become a less trusting person following damage to their car and some even said they had decided to use public transport in future in order to avoid a repeat incident.
