The M25 could be expanded to an unprecedented 14 lanes if Heathrow is granted permission to build a third runway, the airport has revealed in new plans.
Heathrow has unveiled its controversial £15.6 billion proposal, which will require £1.2 billion of the taxpayer's money to complete, as part of its final submission to the government's airports commission.
Under the plans, a new 600m motorway tunnel would be built under the new runway, with the road being expanded to 14 lanes on a two-mile section from Junction 14 next to Terminal 5 to Junction 15 with the M4.
The airport claims that it would be built without causing any disruption to the current motorway.
John Holland-Kaye, Heathrow's development director and chief executive designate, said: "Expansion at Heathrow matters to the whole country.
"Only Heathrow will connect all of the UK to fast-growing international markets. The plans we are submitting to the Airports Commission demonstrate major economic benefits from a third runway for the whole of the UK."
