Lexus has announced the introduction of a new petrol-powered GS model, after ditching its plans to sell only hybrid cars in Europe.

The new GS250 will be fitted with a 2.5-litre petrol engine and will be priced from £32,995 -- exactly £12,000 less expensive than the hybrid-powered G450h.

Lexus has shelved its plans to introduce hybrid technology on all European models. Paul Van der Burgh, director of Lexus Europe, explained that customers in the UK still want the option of owning a petrol-powered car: "There are some 7,000 petrol GS owners out there since the car was launched in 1993 and they have remained loyal to us and we want to keep them."

Despite this, Lexus is also adding a smaller hybrid version to the GS line-up. The new GS300h will use the same engine as the 250 but will also feature hybrid drive. It is expected to go on sale next year and should cost around £30,000.

The GS250 goes on sale next month.
