The Discovery Sport, replacement for the Freelander has had its first model built and it was unveiled at the Halewood factory near Liverpool.
In a futuristic partnership, Land Rover has been providing vehicles to Virgin Galactic in support of their attempts to launch commercial space flights. After supplying Range Rovers and Discovery 4s to the Virgin Galactic Spaceport America site in New Mexico, they will now give the first ever new Land Rover Discovery Sport to Richard Branson’s Space division.
The latest models will have seven seats in a 5 + 2 layout but will still measure only 4.6 metres in length in order to stay within reach of its rivals; indeed it will be shorter than similar vehicles in its class.
The new burst in production signals a great boost for the North-West economy. The Discovery Sport has created 250 new manufacturing jobs following a £200mn investment in the Halewood plant. The impact of Discovery Sport has also been positively felt within the UK supply chain where £3.5bn in contracts have been awarded to 55 suppliers.
Richard Else, Jaguar Land Rover Halewood Operations Director said: “The decision to build the Land Rover Discovery Sport here at Halewood is a testament to our tremendous team who are committed to delivering outstanding customer quality as demonstrated by the award winning Range Rover Evoque.’’
