Land Rover, together with the British Red Cross, is providing winter driving training to volunteers and offering its cars for winter emergencies.
Volunteers from the Red Cross and London Ambulance Service are receiving specialist winter driving training by Land Rover in order to use their skills and the Land Rover vehicles to respond to emergencies that would otherwise be difficult to access and help emergency services reach vulnerable people.
The snow that fell across the UK last week led to 999 emergency calls in Land Rover Defender ambulances. Winter emergencies mobilised a number of 4x4 ambulances on duty in Derbyshire and Leicester, supporting the East Midlands Ambulance Service. At the same time, other teams worked from bases in Redhill in Surrey and Winchester in Hampshire to ensure vital support got to vulnerable people in need.
In order to prevent further incidents, Land Rover has created a useful video for drivers giving winter tips and driving advice, which is available on Youtube.
Land Rover Experience
British drivers who would also like to do this training can enrol on the winter driving course through Land Rover Experience centres nationwide. The manufacturer is also launching a special winter driving course at its 10 centres across the UK, including Solihull in the West Midlands, Halewood on Merseyside and Gaydon in Warwickshire.
The half-day course is delivered by trained instructors to prepare drivers for severe weather, advising on the best techniques to negotiate icy, snowy and wet conditions safely and effectively.
Further topics covered include choosing the correct tyres, vehicle preparation, and essential kit to carry and how to use the vehicle's controls and make the most of Land Rover's unique Terrain Response system in slippery conditions.
Trainees will also be able to turn that theory into practise in one of the Experience Centre’s vehicles on suitable terrain.
