A new three door version of the Kia Rio is available for purchase.

The Kia Rio B-segment hatchback went on sale in the UK last September. From now an additional 3-door version will also be available for £600 less than the five door model.

The new 3 door Kia Rio is available with the same choice of four engines as the five door version. These include two petrol engines and two diesel engines. Each of these four engines is built with efficiency as the highest priority.

Both of the diesel engines include EcoDynamics technology to improve efficiency, such as Intelligent Stop and Go. At the bottom of the range the 1.1-litre CRDi diesel engine offers 74bhp, with fuel consumption of 74.3mpg and 99g/km CO2 emissions. The more powerful 1.4-litre model delivers 98bhp with fuel consumption of 70.6mpg on the combined cycle and 105g/km of CO2 emissions.

The first of the two petrol engines is the 1.25-litre Kappa engine that Kia first released in the new Picanto. This engine is capable of delivering 83bhp. The second petrol engine is the 1.4-litre Gamma, which delivers 107bhp. Both of these engines exceed 50mpg in fuel economy when combined with manual transmission, and have CO2 emissions below the EU's 2012 target of 130g/km. The least efficient version is the 1.4-litre automatic, which has fuel consumption of 44.1mpg.

The same four trim levels are also being carried over from the five door Kia Rio to the three door version. These are named very simply as '1', '1 Air', '2' and '3'.

The entry level '1' trim includes daytime running lights, speed-variable front wipers, headlamp levelling, body coloured bumpers, door handles and door mirrors, tachometer and trip computer, split folding rear seats, a 12-volt power socket and RDS radio, and CD player with MP3 compatibility, USB and AUX Ports, plus Bluetooth connectivity for petrol models. The '1 Air' trim adds air conditioning to this.

The '2' trim level comes with the addition of 16 inch alloy wheels, chrome radiator grille surround, and front fog lights on the outside. Inside the car it adds premium black cloth upholstery, electric heated folding door mirrors with side repeaters, plus a leather steering wheel, gearshift and centre console armrest trim. It also includes air conditioning.

The top level '3' trim increases the size of the alloy wheels to 17 inches, and also adds low-profile tyres, rear combination lamps and LED daytime running lights to the exterior of the vehicle. Additional functionality is provided by an auto-defog system, rain sensing wipers, cruise control and automatic projection-type headlights. Inside the car the front seats can be heated, and the number of speakers is bumped up from 4 to 6.

Whichever trim level you choose all Rio models come with a range of safety technology fitted as standard. That means that you get Electronic Stability Control, Electronic Brake-Force Distribution, Emergency Brake Assist, Emergency Stop Signalling, and Hill-start Assist Control to prevent the car from rolling backwards when starting off on a steep hill.
