25,192 vehicles sold in the UK by Kia Motors (UK) Limited are being recalled by the South Korean manufacturer for the replacement of a possibly faulty brake light switch.
It was discovered after on-going monitoring of vehicle operations and Research and Development checks that the faulty switch could cause rear brake lights to not illuminate in certain circumstances. It may also cause them to remain on after the brake pedal has been released.
Carbonisation on the switch contacts is the cause of the problem, as it can lead to the electric current being interrupted. The fault does not affect braking performance or the operation of anti-lock brakes however, and the company is not aware of any accidents which have been caused by it.
The issue affects a wide range of cars built between 2006 and 2011. Those affected in the UK include some current Sorento and Soul models as well as previous versions of the Carens, Sedona, Sorento and Sportage. A very small number of Optima models were also recalled.
Kia Motors (UK) Limited will contact the owners of all affected vehicles and they will be invited to have their switch replaced free of charge. The switch change takes just a few minutes to complete and can be performed at the owner’s local dealer.
