Kia has announced that an electric car based on the next-generation Soul will go into production in 2014.

Details on the new electric Soul are scarce, but it is rumoured that the new liquid-fuelled version of the Soul could be launched at either the Chicago or New York motor show early next year.

Although the new Soul is said to be a thorough revision of the current model, rather than a mere facelift, the new car will only feature subtle styling tweaks due to the Soul's current popularity in the American market.

The Soul is Kia's first stab at a global electric car, following on from the Ray which is only available on the South Korean market. The Ray is fitted with a 67bhp electric motor and has a range of up to 86 miles.
