Jeep has unveiled a limited edition Grand Cherokee with the looks of the SRT-8 but without the price -- or the thirst -- of its V8-engined brother.

The problems with Jeeps has always been that they are intended for the American market, where petrol costs 2 cents per gallon and anything with less than a 7.0-litre engine is deemed a 'compact'. Because of this, British buyers have traditionally stayed away from Jeeps, or at least opted for one of the company's more frugal diesel models.

Now though, British customers can opt for a diesel-powered Jeep Grand Cherokee which looks, for all intents and purposes, like the top-of-the-range gas-guzzling V8 model.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee S-Limited gets the same massive 20-inch wheels as the SRT-8, chrome trim, smoked headlights and a front grille finished in satin black. They should have called it the Jeep Grand Cherokee 'Drug Dealer Edition'.

On the inside, the S-Limited gets a leather-wrapped heated steering wheel, leather seats, cruise control, sat-nav and an 825W Harman-Kardon sound system with 19 speakers.

Under the bonnet you get the same 237bhp 3.0-litre V6 diesel fitted to the standard Grand Cherokee, so you should hit 60mph in 8.2 seconds and return around 40mpg.

The Grand Cherokee S-Limited goes on sale later this month with prices starting from £44,595.
