Jeep has unveiled its new Grand Cherokee SRT, the fastest and most powerful car the firm has ever made.

Jeep Chrysler UK claims that the new Grand Cherokee SRT is the best handling Jeep ever -- although competition for this accolade is hardly what you'd call fierce -- and, thanks to its 6.4-litre HEMI V8 engine which develops 461bhp, the SRT gets from 0-62mph in five seconds and on to a top speed of 160mph.

The Grand Cherokee gets new SRT-tuned suspension and a new four-wheel-drive system with a rear electronic limited-slip differential. A five-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifters also comes as standard.

Jeep has also fitted the Grand Cherokee with what it calls Fuel Saver technology (four of the engine's eight cylinders are turned off when full power is not required) but even so, the SRT manages just 14.1mpg on the combined cycle and emits 328g/km of CO2 -- more than a Lamborghini Gallardo.

The SRT has been lowered by 3cm and features new 20-inch alloy wheels, twin exhausts and a rear spoiler -- this is not a car in which to remain anonymous. Inside, the Jeep gets a leather heated steering wheel, leather and suede seats and carbon fibre 'accents'. Four body colours are available: Brilliant Black, Mineral Grey, Bright Silver and Deep Cherry.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT is on sale now and costs £58,995.
